Evolution and Prehistoric Man

THINK YOU COULD HAVE SURVIVED ON EARTH 4 BILLION YEARS AGO? Think again! Earth wasn’t such a comfortable place to live. The weather was extremely violent, volcanoes erupted all the time, and meteors bombarded Earth’s surface. Even if you could have put up with the natural world’s ferocity, there wasn’t even any free oxygen in the air! Humans can’t breathe without oxygen. Earth chilled out eventually, and its surface calmed down enough for stream from the volcanoes to condense into clouds and fall as rain. The rain formed oceans that covered much of Earth’s surface. It was in the ocean that scientists believe life began. The ocean water was a safe place for delicate new life. Though they still argue over details, most scientists agree that life began around 3.5 billion years ago.
